    Base Medical

Reviewer cboma, “There are only 3 ob/gyns in town and if you get pregnant, you will have to see one of them. They do not treat pregnant women at the clinic on base. I’ve heard all three doctors (Austidillo, Chartrand, Salama) are all about equal in their knowledge and are all fairly good. The hospital in town is not large and any high risk pregnancies have to go to San Antonio. You can choose to travel to San Antonio if you want anyway for your appointments, however you have to pay out of pocket unless you are deemed high risk. The base provides general practitioners, a pediatrician, and a nurse for women’s health (annual check ups). There are 2 good dentists in town for the dependents. They are Amistad Dental and Dr. Cadena. Both are very good. There is also now a children’s dentist in town, Dr. Hunt and he is very good as well.”

Reviewer cboma, “A lot of people buy a boat here because there is a beautiful lake (Amistad) at the edge of town.”

    • Reviewer cboma, “There are only a few chain restaurants to eat at in town (Chilis, Wings and Rings, Applebees, Fuddruckers).”

      The Brown Bag

Reviewer alwayssmile, “There are very few places I’d recommend in Del Rio, and this is definitely one of them! It’s an eclectic looking restaurant located downtown on Main Street. Has a variety of salads, hot and cold sandwiches, quiches, soups, and more. It’s the perfect place for lunch. They offer a 10% military discount if you show your ID before ordering. Be sure and check out their sister store, Buffalo Girls. “

    • Shopping
    • Reviewer cboma, “The biggest thing to get used to is the lack of shopping. San Antonio is three hours away and you may end up there once of a month. The mall in town is very small (JC Penny, Bealles, Bath and Body Works, Foot Locker, a small movie theater, Ross and Marshalls). Walmart will become your new best friend.”

Reviewer cboma, “Even though the city is on the Mexican border, military are not allowed to cross the border. I have heard of no cases where the nearby violence in Mexico has crossed the border into Del Rio. From what I understand, there’s not much reason to cross the border anyway as most of the shops have shut down over there. The last thing you must have an open mind to is the fact that as a non-hispanic person, you will be a minority in this town. 90% of the town is of Mexican heritage and they have a culture you must become accustomed to.”

Reviewer stephers, ” Don’t be fooled, Laughlin is an incredible base. I love love love the base but could do without the town, the locals (for the most part) are rude and mean to AF people.”

Reviewer cboma, “Del Rio is not as bad as people make it out to be. You just have to have the right attitude.”
