    • Artworks

Reviewer PAwife, “This is wonderful for your little artists. Its a childrens art studio. They have an open art day where you can let them walk from station to station and let them be creative. They also have many other programs and birthday parties. Great for young children and toddlers.”

Inflatable Wonderland in Rolling Oaks Mall

Reviewer PAwife, “This is a huge bouncy house land. There must be about 10+ bouncy houses. They also have a toddler area for the little ones. The prices are good. One set price for the day. You can jump then go have lunch at the food court or I think they offered food there. I cant say it was the cleanest place. But I wouldnt call it dirty. I think the main problem was that they hired high school kids that have never used a vacuum before. They are good about keeping track of the kids. Every has to wear a wrist band and cannot leave without their party. Good place to burn energy. We had toddlers so going during the week during school was the best time for us. Gets pretty busy on the weekends and spring break.”

Fort Sam Houston play date at the teen center

Reviewer PAwife, “Fort Sam offers a great, well organized play group at the teen center (which is by BurgerKing) Check on the MWR page for exact dates and times as they may have changed.
They had an organized snack, lots of toys, lots of kids, a covered play ground right outside, and sometimes the group went on day trips and met at places. It was a great way to make friends and let the little ones play! Best play group on a base Ive ever been to! and I made a great friend there.”

      Mad Dogs on the Riverwalk

Reviewer PAwife, “If you are in to going out dancing I would suggest Mad Dogs. Its a restaurant/ bar during the day and at night has a great dj and dance floor. They do have a cover $5 I think. The crowd is a little older and mature. Late 20’s-40s. Not many problems and not crazy with young kids like clubs, but had a club like feel. Drink prices are a little high I think. But there are many other places to walk to on the Riverwalk. Mad Dogs was my personal favorite. They also have Coyote Ugly which I think smells and the girls at this particular location were raunchy and its super packed with no dance floor.
*If you live on base a cab is about $18 -20 to the riverwalk each way. Dont drink and drive : )
Republic of Texas has a good DJ, but an older crowd and not very busy.
Tabu is packed its just about the Riverwalk on the street level. Hip hop club.
Acapulco Sams is a packed club right next to Mad Dogs ($10 cover) open til 4am.

San Antonio has a great night life for every one! The Cowboy Dance Hall is a huge country bar.”

      Retama Park Horse Races

Reviewer PAwife, “This is a great place to take them family. On Friday nights the have Family night. They have a petting zoo area, pony rides, face painting, and of course the horse races. We had such a blast going! Plus our daughter is a horse lover!!! It was great. San Antonio has so many family fun activities.”

      San Antonio Zoo

Reviewer PAwife, “This isnt the best Zoo Ive ever been to, but its nice. Its kind of small in my opinion. But the kids like it. They offer military discount. We had a season pass because the Zoo is so close to Fort Sam. I thinks its maybe 3 miles from the gate. There is also a little train ride that isnt part of the zoo that is by the zoos parking lot that we would go on once a week. Its about a 2 mile ride through the park there. The kids loved it.

*Dont even bother to attempt Boo at the Zoo for their halloween event. ITS SOOOO CROWDED!! A Huge waste of time. I think all of San Antonio was there. We went and got stuck in traffic for a hour and a half and never made it inside. Take my warning on this one!”

      Texas Transportation Museum

Reviewer PAwife, “Im not sure what the museum offers year round but they have a wonderful Christmas time event. We had a blast with our train loving toddlers. The take you on a short train ride, Santa is there, model trains, refreshments, Christmas lights etc. I think Military was either free or cheap. Very fun Holiday activity!”

    • Church
    • Community Bible Church

Reviewer kaseymb, “Non-denominationl Church. Quick,15 minute drive from Randolph AFB. Very welcoming and military family friendly church. Have classes / childcare for infants – high school. Amazing children & adults choir. Numerous adult Bible study classes & home groups. Awanas Club for kids, meets on Sunday afternoons. Multiple M.O.P.S groups.”

    • Ana’s Mexican Restaurant (Pat Booker Road)

Reviewer tbodge, “Great authentic Mexican dishes…daily specials…awesome service. Best Huevas Rancheros ever! Fajitas are delicious! Always good food and consistent!”

      Mamacitas Mexican Restaurant

Reviewer PAwife, “Delicious food! Im not a huge fan of Mexican food, but this place know what they are doing! Its not just a tortilla covered in beans and slop. The guacamole was sooo good (and I dont usually like it) It was a mix of guac, pico, and sour cream I think the waitress said. It was good. The decor and atmosphere was fun. The staff was wonderful too. Try it.”

      Taco Cabana

Reviewer kaseymb, “Located near Randolph AFB. Great Mexican food, with friendly service and offers 20% military discount daily.”

Reviewer PAwife, “Forget Taco Bell!!!! Taco Cabana is awesome! Dont forget to get their homemade hot sauce. Which is kinda like a pico. Everything here is so good. Great fast food mexican. YUM”

    • Shopping
    • Central Market (Grocery Store/Market)

Reviewer PAwife, “I think I miss the Central Market the most about San Antonio. Its too expensive for everyday shopping but its great for special things. Their meats are amazing. We quit going to dinner at steak houses and started buying our filet mignon here. It was amazing every time! They had a grocery store and a side with prepared foods. The prices were reasonable…. but not commissary prices.
What I bought here: Meats, muffins, prepared meals and lunches, and some fresh produce. The fresh foods are amazing. There is a location right outside of FT Sam. Enjoy it for me!!!”

    • Sports

    Olympia Gymnastics

Reviewer PAwife, “This was our first gymnastics place. My daughter started at 3 and we both absolutely loved it here. The owner is wonderful along with all of the instructors. They have lots of great programs including open gym and camps… even for 3 year olds! It was a great place. I miss it. Its right outside of Ft Sam towards Walmart.
*If you dont want to enroll your child in a class, just take them to the $5 open gym and let them run around and have fun! Its a great way to get them out of the house and some exercise!”

    Hair Salon

Blondes, Brunettes, and Redheads Salon (Trisha McBrayer)

Reviewer tbodge, “This an Aveda Salon and I have been going to the same stylist for 3 years now and absolutely love her! Will be so sad to have to find a new stylist that knows what she is doing! The salon is in an old bank building and the decor is hideous but don’t let that fool you…all the ladies know their stuff! They are a little pricey but you get what you pay for!”

    Salon Selectives

Reviewer dlmccool, “Young Moore at Salon Selectives. If you are looking for a GREAT stylist without the major cost, Young is GREAT. The salon is in a shopping center on Coronado Blvd. at Pat Booker Road between to Nurses Etc. and Coldwell Banker Realty. She is very experienced and talented and is the wife of a retired military member. I have referred several friends to her and am dreading having to leave her. I got a quote from Blondes, Brunettes and Redheads and they were REALLY expensive…”

    Greener Grooming Dog Grooming

Reviewer tbodge, “Would HIGHLY recommend them. They use all natural products and are very personable. They get to know your dog and will let you know if something is out of the ordinary. They are frequently booked up so call back often if you can’t get in. Super reasonable prices for the level of service they give!”

    Schertz Animal Hospital (Dr. Mossberg)

Reviewer tbodge, “Best vet we have ever had! They can take care of everything here even boarding. Very friendly staff and appointments stay on time! Prices are a little more expensive than on base vet clinic which is expected.”

Add things you think families should now about the area before moving here.

Reviewer LisaL, “If you do decide to go elsewhere like Cibolo, Schertz, Live Oak….or even the Stone Oak area which is further away but very upscale just remember traffic. The whole area has had a huge increase of people and it means more wait time in traffic. The I35 heading towards Cibolo gets congested during early morning and around 4 or 5(getting off of work). There are a ton of back roads so do venture all around. One more good thing about staying along 1604, is that it’s close to shopping whether you go in Converse to Walmart or to HEB (Like Walmart but w/only groceries) which is in Universal City. Pat Booker Rd runs right through Universal City and the road go straight to RAFB main gate. One last thing, if you like going to the gym go to the base gym. IT”S AWESOME!!!! 😉 Good luck, you’ll like it there. I’ve been gone for 12 yrs but visit now and again. Hopefully we’ll settle down and move back.”

    Did you like living here?

Reviewer casarez4, “As with any posts you have your good and bad depending on what is important to you. Overall this is a great post. Lots of things in the area to do…Sea World, Six Flags, restaurants, shopping but at the same time you can keep that close knit feeling by living on post. It can feel crowded at times since this is also a medical training post and there are TONS of students being shuffled in and out continually.”

Reviewer LisaL, “I’ve lived in the area for a good part of my life till my husband joined the military. I LOVE IT THERE!!!”
